When tribal styles hit the fall 2011 runway, it wasn't clear if it would catch on, especially in the maternity sections of stores. As it turned out, funky prints in heart-warming colors did take the reigns as the fresh new fall aesthetic.

Singer-actress Hilary Duff has taken the trend into maternity fashion through a number of cute ensembles. Early in her pregnancy she wore this stretchy mayan knit skirt ($134) and recently she wore a silk Isabel Marant "x" pattern dress. The real thing is available in white at Net-a-Porter ($1,170).

The tribal style is easy to do during pregnancy. High-quality tribal print ponchos and sweaters can be passed down for generations. Tribal-print dresses, skirts and tops are not easy to find in the maternity section but worth the effort and if you can't find anything you like, an inexpensive tribal scarf or belt is the easiest way to liven up an outfit.  Here are a few items we put on our shopping lists:
