Generic vs. Name Brand
Are generic drugs the same as name brand?
The
FDA
has announced they may tighten the standards for generic drugs. "Patients and employees of generic-drug makers have told the FDA that some of the medicines don't work as well as the originals," Woodcock said in an interview after speaking to the Generic Pharmaceutical Association in Bethesda, Maryland. She indicated the FDA is discussing tightening the limits "so there is less variability."
I personally thought that there wasn't a difference between generic and name brand. I was always told by the pharmacists that generic are just as effective as the name brand, they just don't cost the insurance companies as much money.
Do you purchase the name brand or generic?
Have you noticed a difference in the effectiveness of name brand medications versus generic?

For many drugs I have not noticed a difference (Generic versions of Tylenol, Motrin, Zantac, Prilosec, Ritalin). The one biggie that has caused a problem in my family is Prozac. I also thought there was not difference between the generic and the name brand until I was switched to the generic of Prozac. After a period of withdrawal symptoms, I felt like I was not taking anything. When I said to my doctor "If I didn't know better, I would think that the generic version wasn't working the same as the name brand." She told me that I was not the first patient to have the problem. I had to switch back to the name brand even though my insurance didn't cover it. Since then, I have talked to others who have had the same problem. When they work, generics are great, but when they don't, the name brand becomes very expensive!

Yes I have noticed the same. For years I took Zoloft which worked wonders for my depression and anxiety. Then when the generic came out, I tried that thinking it was the same and it WAS NOT. It was horrible. I have to take the name brand and it's extremely expensive. It seems so unfair.
