For the first three months of a pregnancy, most women opt to keep the news a secret; the most common reason being that the risk of miscarrying drops significantly after the first trimester. During those first three months, the women who start to show quickly have a unique problem. What you wear can easily tip someone off. Some clothing choices may seem like the perfect hideout but they can actually be the perfect giveaway. Here are ten tips to help you hide it:

  1. Save the Empire Waist. Yes, empire waist tops will hide a belly, but the style instantly brings pregnancy to mind.
  2. Lose the Low-Rise. Low-rise pants accentuate any kind of belly that might hang out. If you like to wear low-rise pants, just make sure your shirts cover the top of the pants.
  3. Hide the High-Rise. On the other hand, high waist pants define any curvature in the abdomen area. Definitely ditch the high waist pants until you’re ready to spill the beans.
  4. Revel in Ruching. Ruching, the bunched up fabric that makes its appearance on many maternity shirts these days, is a great way to obscure any body changes.
  5. Don’t Fight Fabric. Certain fabrics cling and sit in the wrong areas. Make sure that tops you wear don’t sit on your belly bump.
  6. Breasts are Best Left Unsaid. For some women, it’s the sudden change in cup size that is a dead giveaway of pregnancy. Breasts are hard to hide, but accentuating them or drawing attention to them at this point is probably not a good idea.
  7. Lower Your Kicks. High heels take the posture of a woman and force it into a pregnant shape by adding curvature to the back and pushing the belly out. You can imagine what kind of effect it has on a woman who is actually pregnant.
  8. Shape Up. High-rise shaping pantyhose, form-fitting camis and Spanx can help keep in any protruding bellies.
  9. Paint it Black. Black is slimming and obscuring, making it the perfect hue to hide your pregnancy with.
  10. Scarf it Down. Long scarves are the easiest way to hide a belly bump. Celebrities use this trick all the time. Tie a knot up by the neck and let the rest drape down.
